Photo web gallery for amateur photographer needed ---suggestions?
I'm looking for a good photo gallery web site that holds a lot of photographs - good for an amateur photographer that doesn't have any money.
fotki. com Allows you to easily upload your photo's and also has weekly contests you can enter your photo and vote on other photo's.
How can a strictly amateur self taught artist get to exhibit at the Tate Gallery.?
I heard on the UK radio this morning that a relatively unknown artist is allowed to exhibit a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the painting has been descibed bu professional critics as awful and amateurish. In the past "artists" have been awarded large sums of money for such art as ' A PILE OF BRICKS ' , an ' UNMADE BED ' etc. How ?
Do you understand contemporary art? Conceptual art lies in the idea, thoery, or philosophy underlying the art, not in the execution of it. Art critics are extremely well educated in art theory and the movements within contemporary art. While you may not always agree with their opinions (because neither do I) you have to respect that they know what they are talking about.
If you want to make it big, I would suggest getting enrolled at a well respected art school and beef up on your theory, that way the underlying concepts of your art will be strong. Take advantage of the constructive criticism offered by your peers and professors, it can only make your work better, since technical perfection does not necessarily produce "great" art.
Also, being enrolled in an institution will give you tons of opportunites to show your work and build strong networks of connections in the artworld.
Good luck, maybe I'll be writing about you someday.
Do art galleries purchase photos from amateur photographers?
I don't want to walk in my local art gallery expecting to make business if they stick to professionals.
In fact, where do galleries get all of their art from? Do they buy it, or are things donated? Or a combination of both?
Get some business cards made up or a5 folded cards which you can print some of your images on.
Traipse around to the galleries in your area and enquire about exhibiting or displaying there.
Do not be pushy and if they want to see your book (portfolio) then arrange for a time convenient to the gallery manager/owner to do so.

Yes, galleries will display and sell anything from anyone if they think they can sell it or if it will get people through the door.

Only the major art galleries and museus will have works donated.
Where is an art gallery that lets amateurs display photos for sale near Denver, CO?
I would like to sell some photos, but don't know where I could display them. Can anyone help?
I think you may have more luck going around to coffee shops and see if they allow rotating displays. I know of a few in Boulder that do this (not sure of the process to get "on the schedule" so call around), and Paris on the Platte in Denver does rotating exhibits, but it tends to be more on the mix media side instead of photography.

A few words of advice: A friend displayed their work at various coffee shops in the area. The biggest problem he had was all the time and money it took to print, matte, and frame the photos. Sure you could go with cheap materials, but then that shows in the display. All in all, I think he ended up selling a total of 3 pieces, which didn't cover the cost of putting together the exhibit. And then he was left with a dozen of framed pieces that he had to store until the next showing or offload at a cheaper price and thus loosing money.
Other key factor is pricing. By the time you put together the display, the material cost of a piece is already very high. Finding a coffee shop with the right clientele that can pay $250 and up for a piece is rare. My friend found that the coffee shops are happy to have high quality art that rotates, and the customers enjoy looking at the exhibit, but very few buy.
How does a newcomer get their photography into a gallery?
I have been an amateur photographer for years and I want to begin getting serious. I want to focus on fine art. For starters, I live in a small suburb of Detroit,MI. and we have a local art gallery which invites new artists to exhibit. That's great and I'm putting work together now.
My question is, how do people get their work into larger or more prestigious galleries in big cities, like LA or NY? How does one go from unknown to being known?
Thanks for your help.
It is kind of like learning to walk. You have to crawl first. You are making the perfect first step by displaying in your local gallery. It is actually quite easy to SUBMIT to galleries all over the world. Google "call for entries" and you can begin getting in the clique. It is really like anything else, the more you get into it, the more will come to you. I have submitted to galleries in many, many places. That gets you into a loop that will lead to contacts with other galleries, and on and on.

Getting your work SELECTED to be in a gallery is an entirely different matter. When you begin submitting to galleries, you will soon see the types of photos that are selected. Even in your local gallery, pay attention to and learn from others. That does not mean to copy other's work, always do your own and follow your own muse, but looking at other's work always gives me fresh energy and ideas.

My goal is to also get some work in a New York gallery. I have eight photos submitted to an upcoming showing in SoHo Gallery there now, hopefully this time will be the charm and I will be selected. But if not, I will just keep trying. That is really all you can do. Continue to improve your art and keep submitting to call for entries. I have at least 2 emails in my box everyday from galleries wanting submissions. Just start slow and it will build for you.

There are also portfolio reviews in Houston and Seattle, but these require some serious portfolio work on your part, something you will likely need a few years to create. There are representatives from galleries all over the country at these reviews. They are usually held once every two years. Email me if you want more info as I will have to look up the specifics for you.

How can I make a searchable photo gallery or slideshow on my website?
I'm making a website for an amateur dramatic society that I'm a member of. On the site there is a list of members and a list of the plays that we've done. I'd like to upload all of the photos we have from all of the plays to the website but have the gallery searchable so that, for instance, if you clicked on the name of a play it would show you all the photos from that play, or if you clicked on a person's name it would show you all the photos of that person. If you use IMDB you will see what I mean, I'm after something similar to the way the photos on there work.

What would I need to make something like this? HTML? JavaScript? Flash? I have basic knowledge of each of those. Will it be incredibly complicated or would I be able to get some sample code and adapt it?

Any pointers appreciated!
You don't need Flash. A database would help (especially if you have gazillions of photos) but it's not essential.

This can be done with nothing more than HTML / JavaScript. Why don't you try www [dot] rentacoder [dot] com?
How do I get art in a gallery?
One of my goals this year is to have a art show at a local art gallery. I'm a photographer, and I'm only 16 but I already do legit photo shoots [i'm not an amateur because of my age] Anyways, how do I go about having an opening at a gallery? Please let me know. And please don't use my age as no one taking my work in because that's not acceptable.

Thanks :]

As an amateur photographer how can i start selling pictures?
I have a nice digital camera (EOS 20D) and have been shooting for a year or so now. I have some pictures that I really like and have received great feedback on. If I wanted to sell a few shots how should I proceed?
Should I try to sell prints, and if so where should I get them made? If I knew where to get some good prints made I found a small college gallery that hosts and sells for regional artist. Is something like this my best bet?

Looking for the "correct" starting point more than anything I suppose.
Try Cafepress: www.cafepress.com/cp/info/storere…
You can upload your images, create and sell a variety of customizable products (prints, posters, cards, calendars, tshirts, gadgets...) with zero upfront costs and zero inventory investment.
What display options does an artist showing at a gallery have without nails/thumbtacks, and a low budget?
Me and several other amateur artists with limited resources are going to be displaying our artwork at a rented location that prohibits damaging their wall. This means no thumbtacks, nails, and tap that will rip their paint off (which seems like most kinds of tape that actually stick.) We're talking about putting up frames for photos, canvas paintings, and display boards. I'm at a loss, and we're part of a program that is just starting out and has a very low budget.

Ideas? :-)
Hi there you will have to use portable stands .You can use a portable washing line in the center of the room ,take long pieces of string and tie loops at various intervals ,hang pictures from top to bottom. If you use all 4 sides of the wash line people can then move around in a circle. You can also use stand alone fold up umbrellas just tie string around the outside and do the same as the wash line.Use some wood and make big squares cover it with chicken wire and you will have lots of place to hook the paintings , you can lean them against the wall just make sure to support the bottom ends as to prevent the whole lot sliding down and damaging the wall
Does anyone know a art gallery in eagle river or anchorage or just somewhere to hang your work?
